A magician's diary

So, I keep reading that lots of magicians have been banned from casinos because they cheat with the cards. I think they may have got the word "casino" confused with "arcade"and "cards" confused with "coin pushers". If they are banned it's only because they rock the coin pushers.Spent a lot of today on the phone with other magicians brainstorming ideas so I've got very warm ears. I've got two meetings in the morning about upcoming jobs and I'll be demoing 2 custom routines I have designed especially.

On Saturday I was in Clapham at the 02 store doing a similar gig to last week. The weather was pretty bleak but the folks that stopped by to see some magic had a little sunshine brought into their lives (I write all this stuff myself, y'know!).I went to Guilford in the evening for a close-up show for around 20 people at a private house. I don't get a chance to do these very often but they are a lot of fun. Its 30 minutes of magic and mind reading at a much more leisurely pace than at a table. You get to do some feature routines that are not suitable to the noise and bustle at of a banquet hall.
I closed the show with a trick that I have been working on for a few months. The effect is a tenner is borrowed and signed. I take it and it disappears in a flash of flames. 15 minutes later on the other side of the room the same guy cuts open a lemon that he has had from the start and finds his signed lemon scented tenner. The room then erupts and I'm carried aloft from the room with people chanting my name. The last bit is optional.

On Saturday I did a marathon 7 hours of magic with 2 jobs back to back. First job was a promotion for 02 at their store in Richmond, Surrey. My job was to show passers by some magic and the promo girl I was with gave them a flier. I have developed some special routines with mobile phones as I have done a few of these lately and they were very well received. That was 5 hours of magic and while it may not be digging a ditch it sure takes it out of you. I then headed home to freshen up and then head back on the road to a 40th birthday party in Chelsea, really enjoyed this gig and it was nice to be inside after the chilly afternoon gig.Last Wednesday I went to see Derren Brown's new show in Crawley. If you've not seen Derren live and you think its all camera shenanigans and actors then check him out live. It'll make your head go all fuzzy.
If this is your first visit to the website then you won't have noticed anything but if you're a returning visitor you'll have seen the site has a whole new look. We've had the builders in for the last few weeks but it's all done now. Hope you like it.

I spent some time this morning corresponding via email with Mr Ajibola Mba who is the personal aide to a member of the Nigerian government. He needs to complete a transaction and he needs my help. He told me he is trustworthy god fearing man; I will do my best to help him.
This afternoon I spent dealing with invoices and general office duties. The practicalities of showbizness aren’t that exciting, but it needs to be done. Performing is what I love so I try and do all the admin as quick as possible so it is out of the way.
In the evening I went to The Magic Circle which was great. I haven’t been there in about 4 months since it was refurbished. This years is The Magic Circle centenary so its looking all shiny and new.

I've just got back from working at a wedding reception in Kingston, Surrey. It's nice to work 10 minutes from home and be back in time for Match of the Day.
I'm going to catch up with some magic books after I've finished writing this. I haven't had time to read much for a few weeks and it's great to unwind with a magic book. Then I've got to get an early night (not a morning person) as I'm working the brunch stint tomorrow in the restaurant.
Stayed up late on Friday night and spent a large part of today working on 2 ideas I had for new routines that are in their infancy, I'm very excited about both but its early days yet. I contacted a few friends to see if they had any ideas on how to work out the kinks and its looking much better - on paper! No one will be seeing them for quite a few months even if they do get past the developmental stage but I am really enthusiastic about both.

Today I visited the RSVP entertainment trade show at Olympia for a few hours with the rather splendid mind reader Luke Jermay. Luke was looking for another act for a show he is putting together and I needed to meet with a couple of agencies.
I then dashed off to Witley Park Conference Centre in Godalming, Surrey to do a corporate event for Proctor and Gamble. The theme of the evening was Harry Potter and they had barn owls handlers walking amongst the guests and the tables were bedecked with Potter paraphernalia like witches hats, goofy glasses, broom sticks and wands. It was a fun gig.Tried out some new routines tonight that I have been working on for the last few months and I was very pleased with how they were received. I will gradually be phasing them in to give them a run in the first team.
